Quick summary
- OfficePortal Standard is free for the first 5 users, then ₹60 per user per month, with Indian statutory payroll built in.
- BambooHR publishes Core, Pro and Elite at $10, $17 and $25 per employee per month, plus a $250 monthly minimum for teams of 25 or fewer.
- BambooHR does not calculate PF, ESI, Professional Tax or TDS. Its payroll add-on covers US employees only.
- BambooHR has no permanent free plan; it offers a 7-day trial instead.
Why teams compare OfficePortal and BambooHR
BambooHR is one of the best-known HR platforms in the world, and its name comes up whenever a company researches HR software, including in India. The comparison usually ends quickly once statutory payroll enters the conversation, because BambooHR was built around US HR practice, not Indian compliance.
The two products also price very differently. OfficePortal sells three flat, published plans. BambooHR keeps Pro and Elite behind a sales quote, and applies a flat monthly minimum to smaller teams rather than a simple per-user rate.
Pricing compared
At ten employees, OfficePortal Standard costs ₹300 a month, since the first five users are free. BambooHR's own pricing page states that companies with 25 employees or fewer pay a flat $250 a month regardless of tier, so a ten-person team on BambooHR pays $250, not the $100 that ten times its $10 Core rate would suggest.
Past 25 employees, BambooHR shifts to its per-employee rate. A 100-employee company on Core works out to roughly $1,000 a month, and Pro and Elite cost more again, plus optional add-ons such as time tracking or an applicant tracking system. OfficePortal's Premium and Elite plans are published on its pricing page, so you can calculate your own cost at any headcount without contacting sales.
Payroll and statutory compliance
This is the clearest difference between the two. OfficePortal's payroll software calculates PF, ESI, Professional Tax, Labour Welfare Fund and TDS, generates Form 16, and reads directly from attendance and leave.
BambooHR's payroll add-on supports US employees only, so it cannot run Indian statutory payroll. Indian companies using BambooHR for HR typically run a separate Indian payroll product alongside it, which means two systems and two vendors to reconcile every month, rather than one.
Where BambooHR may suit you better
- Your workforce is entirely or mostly US-based, where BambooHR's payroll and benefits add-ons apply.
- You want a well-known, heavily reviewed HRIS with a large marketplace of US-focused integrations.
- You are comfortable with quote-based pricing and can negotiate rates directly with a sales team.
- You need advanced compensation planning and strategic HR tools available on BambooHR's Elite tier.
Where OfficePortal fits better
- You run payroll in India and need PF, ESI, PT and TDS handled without a separate product.
- You want published prices you can check yourself, not a quote you have to request.
- You are under 25 employees and don't want a flat monthly minimum that makes a small team pay a large-team rate. See how this works for startups and for IT companies.
- You want attendance built in from day one, including GPS and biometric check-in, through attendance tracking.
How to choose
- Confirm where your employees are based, since this decides whether BambooHR's payroll add-on even applies to you.
- Get a written quote for BambooHR Pro or Elite before comparing, since only Core is published.
- Add BambooHR's $250 monthly minimum into your maths if you have 25 employees or fewer.
- List every statutory output you must produce and ask both vendors to demonstrate it live.
- Run one month of payroll in parallel before you switch providers.
- Confirm current prices with both vendors, as published and quoted rates change.
