Calculate Salary Increment: A Complete Guide for Employees

calculate salary increment

To calculate salary increment as a percentage, subtract your old salary from your new salary, divide by the old salary and multiply by 100. A move from ₹6,00,000 to ₹6,60,000 CTC is a 10% increment. To calculate salary increment in rupees from a percentage, multiply the old salary by the percentage: 8% of ₹50,000 a month is ₹4,000. The catch is which number you start from, because CTC, gross pay and in-hand pay can give three different answers for the same hike. This guide walks through all three.

Pooja's appraisal letter said 12%. Her monthly in-hand pay went up by only about 9.5%, and she spent a week convinced HR had made a mistake. They hadn't. Her variable pay target had risen from 10% to 12% of her CTC, so part of the raise will arrive as an annual payout rather than in her monthly salary, and her employer's PF and gratuity grew with her basic. None of that is visible in the headline number. Once you know how to calculate salary increment on each figure, the gap makes sense, and you can check your own letter in five minutes. Most people never check, and most of the time the maths is right.

The Formula to Calculate Salary Increment

There are two versions, and both are simple.

Increment percentage = (new salary − old salary) ÷ old salary × 100

New salary = old salary × (1 + increment percentage ÷ 100)

So an 11% hike on a ₹45,000 monthly salary gives ₹45,000 × 1.11 = ₹49,950. Going the other way, a rise from ₹45,000 to ₹49,950 is ₹4,950 ÷ ₹45,000 × 100 = 11%. Always use the old salary as the base, not the new one, or the percentage comes out lower than it should.

How to Calculate Salary Increment on CTC, Gross and In-Hand Pay

Here's Pooja's raise worked through each figure:

  • Old CTC: ₹7,20,000, with a 10% variable target of ₹72,000, so fixed pay is ₹6,48,000 (₹54,000 a month)
  • New CTC after 12%: ₹8,06,400, with a 12% variable target of ₹96,768, so fixed pay is ₹7,09,632 (₹59,136 a month)
  • Increase in CTC: 12%
  • Increase in fixed monthly pay: ₹5,136, or about 9.5%

Her in-hand pay rises roughly in line with the fixed part, because PF on her full basic grows by the same proportion. The rest of the 12% arrives once a year, if targets are met. Our guide to CTC meaning explains why the components move differently.

How to Calculate Salary Increment After a Promotion or Job Change

Promotions usually come with a bigger jump than annual increments, because the new role sits in a higher salary band. When you change jobs, calculate the hike on fixed pay, not just CTC: a new offer can show a 30% CTC increase but only 15% more fixed pay if it's loaded with variable pay or joining bonuses. Also check what you lose, such as unvested bonuses or a gratuity entitlement you were close to reaching. If the increment is backdated, the difference for the past months is paid as arrears, usually in one later pay run.

What Decides the Number Before You Calculate Salary Increment

Most companies combine three inputs: your performance rating or band, the company's increment budget for the year, and where your current pay sits against the market or the salary band for your role. Someone rated highly but already paid at the top of their band may get a smaller percentage than someone rated slightly lower but paid well below the midpoint. Inflation shapes the budget, but it's rarely applied person by person. The letter itself should spell this out; our guide to the salary hike letter format shows what a clear one includes.

How OfficePortal Helps Companies Calculate Salary Increment Fairly

Increments go wrong when ratings, salaries and letters live in different places. In OfficePortal's performance management system, appraisals group employees into bands such as exceeds, meets and below, and band outcomes feed increment and promotion decisions, so the same rating leads to the same treatment across teams. Increment decisions then flow directly into the payroll run in cloud-based payroll software, which rebuilds the salary structure from the new CTC instead of someone retyping it.

Each revision is recorded against the employee's compensation history in HR management software, and the salary revision letter, generated from a template, is stored in the encrypted HR document management vault where the employee can see it. Payslips on the Android or iOS app show the new figures from the first month. Tech companies running annual appraisal cycles for hundreds of engineers can see how it fits on our HR software for IT companies page.

OfficePortal links every rating to the right raise and the right payslip. The performance management system groups employees into bands that feed increment and promotion decisions, increments flow straight into payroll, which rebuilds each salary structure from the new CTC, and every revision is recorded in HR management. Salary revision letters are generated from a template and stored in the encrypted document vault, and employees see the new figures on payslips in the Android or iOS app from the first month. Calculate Salary Increment FAQs

Subtract the old salary from the new salary, divide by the old salary and multiply by 100. A rise from ₹50,000 to ₹55,000 is a 10% increment.

Multiply your old salary by the percentage. An 8% increment on ₹60,000 a month is ₹4,800, making the new salary ₹64,800.

Usually because part of the raise went into variable pay, or because PF, gratuity and income tax also increased with the higher salary.

Check both. CTC shows the total package, but fixed pay shows what reaches you every month, which matters more for budgeting.
